Step 1: Define the MVP
Write one sentence: “For [user] who needs [job], the app lets them [action] so that [outcome].” List the three to five screens that deliver that outcome and cut everything else. Most failed apps are too big, not too small.
Step 2: Choose how to build it
| Approach | Best for | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native Android (Kotlin, Jetpack Compose) | Performance-critical, deep device features | Best performance and platform fit | Android only; separate iOS build |
| Flutter (Dart) | Android + iOS from one codebase, custom UI | Fast, consistent UI, one codebase | Larger app size; Dart skill needed |
| React Native (JS/TS) | Teams that already know React | One codebase, large ecosystem | Native modules sometimes needed |
| PWA (installable web app) | Simple tools, internal use, fastest launch | No store review, cheapest | Limited device access; not in Play Store by default |
| No-code (FlutterFlow, Glide, Adalo) | Validation, simple data apps | Very fast to a first version | Scaling and vendor lock-in limits |
Step 3: Design and build with AI assistance
Sketch the screens (Figma or even paper), then build in vertical slices: one complete user journey at a time. AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Cursor or Copilot are very effective for scaffolding screens, API clients and boilerplate. Keep a human responsible for architecture, data models and security. Read our production checklist before you ship anything built mostly by AI.
Step 4: Backend, data and integrations
Most business apps need login, a database and an API. Managed options such as Firebase or Supabase get you there quickly; a custom Node/Python API gives more control. If the app is part of a business process (inventory, orders, attendance, approvals), design the data model around that process. See process automation with AI and our ERP and mobile-app example.
Step 5: Test properly
- Test on at least three real devices across Android versions and screen sizes.
- Use Play Console internal and closed testing tracks. New personal developer accounts may need a closed test with a minimum number of testers for a set period before production release; check Google’s current requirements.
- Test offline, slow-network and low-battery behaviour.
Step 6: Publish on Google Play
- Create a Google Play Console developer account (one-time registration fee of $25).
- Prepare the app bundle (
.aab), icon, screenshots, feature graphic and a privacy policy URL. - Complete the Data safety form and content rating questionnaire honestly.
- Roll out to testers, then to production; start with a staged rollout.
How much does it cost to create an Android app?
Costs vary widely with scope and who builds it. A simple MVP built with modern tools and a lean team can be a small fraction of the figures quoted by large agencies. As a real data point, AWI Digital delivered a complete process-automation ERP with a mobile app for a manufacturing plant at $650. Your quote depends on screens, integrations, back-end complexity and support needs; we scope it in a short call.
Ongoing costs to plan for: the $25 Play fee (one-off), cloud hosting, push notification and SMS/email services, app updates for new Android versions, and support.

Frequently asked questions
Can I create an Android app without coding?
Yes, with no-code tools such as FlutterFlow, Glide or Adalo, or by using AI coding assistants with guidance. For anything business-critical, get an engineer to review security and scalability.
How long does it take to build an Android app?
A focused MVP can take 1–4 weeks with AI-accelerated development. Complex apps with several integrations take longer.
Should I build Android first or iOS first?
Choose based on your users. Android dominates in India, Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America; iOS is stronger in the US, UK, Japan and Australia. Flutter or React Native gives you both from one codebase.
Do I need a Google Play account to distribute my app?
Only for the Play Store. You can also distribute APKs directly or ship a PWA, but Play is where most users expect to find apps.
Can AWI Digital build and publish the app for me?
Yes. We design, build, test and publish Android and iOS apps and provide ongoing support.
